Greg Johnson & David Zsutty
Budapest, Hungary, August 2023
In August 2023, antifascists became aware that two white supremacists with longstanding ties to the West Coast far-right, Greg Johnson and David Zsutty, had begun working together in Budapest, Hungary. Greg Johnson is editor-in-chief of Counter-Currents, a white nationalist publishing company. David Zsutty was exposed in 2019 for his involvement with Identity Evropa, following the Unicorn Riot leak of Identity Evropa's internal chat logs.
Johnson and Zsutty spent July 24 through August 18, 2023 in Budapest attending a summer course at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), one of the leading universities in Hungary. Johnson and Zsutty were attending the summer program to learn Hungarian, presumably so they could immigrate to Hungary.
The two were believed to be residing together at Falk Miksa 28. 5. em. 4B. Budapest, 1055 Hungary. Johnson registered a for-profit company at that address, doing business as "Middle Europe Books."
Johnson has a previous connection to Hungary as well. In 2014, he was invited to a conference in Budapest hosted by Richard Spencer's National Policy Institute (NPI). He did not attend, however, because the Hungarian government banned the event and threatened attendees with deportation.
Johnson was deported from Norway in 2019 for his support of mass-murderer Anders Breivik. In the four years since his deportation, Johnson has lived in Budapest. The co-founder of Counter-Currents, Michael Polignano, has lived in Budapest since 2014 and was photographed there in March 2023 with Jason Kessler, organizer of the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
In March 2022, Zsutty was admitted to the bar in California, after graduating from Chapman University's Dale E. Fowler School of Law. He has a PO Box listed in San Luis Rey, and a year ago had a business address listed in Oceanside, California.
In June 2023, Zsutty published an article on the Counter-Currents website about his time in Hungary, portraying the country as an example of the resurgent white ethnostate he wants to see in the US. In an article from August 2023, while still in Budapest, he stated that he is now a full-time "activist."
In August 2023, Johnson announced that he had appointed Zsutty, who is currently working for free, as the Executive Director of Johnson's newly-formed "Homeland Institute." The Institute's website says it is a registered 501©(3).
Fascists like Johnson and Zsutty see Hungary as a safe space for antisemitic and racist ideology. Despite this, when ELTE students learned of Johnson and Zsutty's background, they were quick to organize against them. Several students contacted ELTE administration, asking for action to be taken. Students planned a boycott of the graduation ceremony, with almost the entire student body agreeing not to attend. Several students also stopped attending classes. The ELTE administration were forced to cancel the graduation and certification ceremony due to the boycott.
To those fascists who spread hate throughout the world: there is no place on earth so remote that we cannot find you. There is no place you can go where your hatred will be unopposed. Wherever you go, we will find you, and we will expose you.
